CHAPTER SIXTEEN
I pull into the parking lot of the garage and look up, noting the huge KANE sign in big red letters.
“It’s my brother’s shop,” Token explains before I can ask.
“Which one?” I park the truck and pull the keys out.
“Crash.”
“Crash? That’s a new one.”
“His real name’s Cash, but everyone calls him Crash. He’s a racecar driver.” He gets out of the truck, and I follow, ready to meet yet another Kane brother.
“And apparently, a mechanic,” I say as I come around the front of the truck and nearly bump into Token. I stop while he gazes down at me. I shove my fingers in the back pockets of my jeans, drop my shoulders and wait. Obviously, he’s got something to say before we go in. Probably wants to warn me about being a good girl or something.
“Listen”—he clears his throat—“I know it’s tough talking about your little brother.”
“Token.” Shit. I didn’t think he was going back to this.
“Just hear me out.” He raises a hand, and like a damn good girl, I press my lips together. “I promise I’ll only say this once then I’ll let it alone.”
I turn away from him and stare up at the huge KANE sign. The tenderness in his voice keeps me silent.
“Hon, sooner or later, you’re gonna need to come to terms with the death of your family.” He touches my arm, but my eyes remain burning into the huge red sign. “If you keep avoiding your feelings for them, good or bad, if you continue to shut down that part of you, you will forget how to feel.” He grabs my chin and forces me to look at him. “And if you can’t feel, you can’t love.”
“I don’t need love.”
“Everyone needs love. Be it from your family, a friend, or a lover, we all need it to survive. And you are a survivor, Harley.” He leans down closer, and my heart beats faster, fearful of what abnormal yet heartfelt words might come out of his mouth.
God, please make him stop! I don’t like this Token!
“The past two days, you’ve thrown your body at me, teased me, and tempted me.” His thumb runs across my chin. “Do you know why I resist you?”
Gazing into his sincere eyes, I swallow hard, unable to respond, afraid of his answer.
“When I touch you, I wanna be sure you’re gonna fuckin’ feel it.”
His candid, strong words hitch my breath, and the air stays trapped in my throat as he pulls my chin toward him and places his soft lips briefly against mine. The kiss gentle and warm.
He releases my chin and starts for the door to the shop. Watching him in his rugged jeans, dark gray tee, and big black boots walking away from me, it clicks. Something inside me clicks too. I run up to him and punch him in the back. “No! You don’t get to do that!” I go to punch him again, but he catches my arm and spins me around, pulling me against him.
